dreams
why can't i dream of my loved one? It's been almost ten months! Do you believe our loved ones visit us in dreams? Or is it just wishful thinking?
Response
Dreams represent a powerful alternative reality which we (humans) have been trying to "figure out" since the beginning of our existence. What dreams mean is highly personal and subjective. At the very least I believe that they represent a way for deeper parts of our psyche to speak to us. Some people (myself included) believe that, since death takes us into an unknown alternative reality it might be possible for both the dream state and the death state to communicate with each other. If that is true (and it's a big "if"), why do some people not dream of those who have died even tho' they might want communication? First off, we don't remember the vast majority of our dreams. Remembering dreams is both art and skill. We have to want to remember our dreams and then we have to demonstrate the willingness to "record" the dream either on tape or in writing or pictures. The recording establishes a connection to the "dreamer" in us. One of my teachers, a doctor by the name of Wm. Brugh Joy taught a simple prayer before sleep: "I ask the dreamer in me to remember my dream". Sometimes, we think we want to have a dream about a loved one who has died but we are really afraid to - maybe we won't be able to stop dreaming, and we'll get lost in the dream state. It's important to be very clear about any ambivalent feelings which would influence the part of your unconscious that dreams.
